Matthias Schack-Arnott is a Melbourne based percussive artist working in contemporary classical and experimental music as a performer, composer and improvisor.

Described by The Guardian as ‘sonically and visually exquisite’, Schack-Arnott’s solo work explores unique and ambitious approaches to percussive performance, often involving the development of new instrumental set-ups built in collaboration with architects, engineers and technicians. His work has been presented by Melbourne Festival, La Comete (France), The Unconformity (Tasmania), Arts House, Supersense – Festival of the Ecstatic (Arts Centre Melbourne), MPavilion, Spor Festival (Denmark), Spot Festival (Denmark) & Next Wave (2012 & 2014). He won the 2016 Melbourne Prize for Music ‘Development’ award and the 2014 Green Room Award in the category ‘Outstanding Work by an Emerging Artist’ for his work ‘Fluvial’.

At the age of 21 Matthias was invited to be the Artistic Associate of Speak Percussion, who won the 2016 Australian Art Music Award for Excellence in Experimental Music. Matthias is a key artist in the creative team and a performer in almost all of Speak’s projects nationally & internationally.

As a guest artist Matthias appears with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra, ELISION, Australian Art Orchestra, Chamber Made Opera, Victoria Opera and Nick Tsiavos Ensemble.

Matthias has worked with many leading musicians, including Steve Reich, John Zorn, Michael Pisaro, Tony Buck, Ingar Zach, The Necks, Stephen O’Malley, Erkki Veltheim, Johannes Kreidler, Fritz Hauser, Brett Dean, Anthony Pateras, Richard Barrett, Jon Rose, Robin Fox, Thomas Meadowcroft, Liza Lim and Oren Ambarchi.

Performance highlights include Berliner Festspiele (Germany), GAIDA Festival (Lithuania), ARENA Festival (Latvia), Roullette (New York), CONNECT Festival (Sweden), Batteries IV Festival (Geneva), Taiwan National Concert Hall, Salihara Festival (Indonesia), Adelaide Festival, Perth International Arts Festival, Melbourne Festival, MONA FOMA & Dark Mofo.
