Sounds Unheard is a free music education program for secondary music students, hosted by the internationally acclaimed Speak Percussion. Open to all instrumentalists and composers, this free program introduces creative approaches to music making, encourages critical thinking, and connects students with some of the most inventive and adventurous artists in Australia and beyond. Participants choose from a range of activities to create a tailor-made program, reflecting their individual interests and talents. Sounds Unheard will run from 2015-2017, offering a range of unique opportunities that will develop student’s creativity and inspire through innovation.

2016 PROGRAM

Key activities in 2016 include:

Sounds Unheard Artist Program (November 29-December 3)

Experience professional music-making, explore contemporary and experimental music practice, and present a public performance. In 2016 Sounds Unheard Members are invited to take part in the world premiere of Bell Curve, an immersive and intimate performance work for twelve independent musicians featuring the Federation Handbells.

School Holiday Intensive (July 4-8)

Sounds Unheard Members will workshop Bell Curve, a new work by Eugene Ughetti, ahead of a public performance in late 2016. Through an exploration of complex networked temporal relationships, a massed sound event unfolds across the performance space, a world revealed between the attacks and beating patterns of tuned bell resonance. New wireless technology will enable a mass of performers to perform precisely across vast spaces in one complex spatial composition.

Sounds Unheard Internships

Participate in the creative development of new Speak Percussion projects as a Sounds Unheard Artist Intern, or develop your interviewing skills as a Sounds Unheard Reporter with radio broadcast training at PBS FM.
