Anicca is an exploration of cycles and orbits in sound.
Inspired by the relationship between the cyclic and the transcendental in Hindu and Buddhist thought, Anicca sets out to examine the relationship between time, space and sound when these elements are in perpetual motion. Continuing his interest in kinetic systems, acclaimed percussionist Matthias Schack-Arnott has worked with Creative Engineer Richard Allen to construct a variable speed rotating instrument.
Textural surfaces form circular patterns and pathways across the instrument’s surface, giving rise to timbral cannons, mechanical phasing and microtonal pitch cycles. Schack-Arnott and Eugene Ughetti perform the work through interlocking musical gestures, facing each other from opposite sides of the instrument.
Anicca reflects on ideas of impermanence, recurrence and the altered perception of time. Hypnotic and dreamlike, each of its elements are integrated into a unified orbit, utilising a unique rotational lighting design and a multi-channel speaker system.
